I wanted to post this yesterday (Thursday) as a TBT piece to follow up my "look back at blank variant comics." In that post I mentioned that I feel like the demand for blank variant comics is slowly fading and I'm not doing nearly as many as I used to. This came along with a decline in convention profits for the past year. Don't get me wrong, I'm not doing this solely for the money, but at some point you get used to a certain standard. I think for me the decline in sales isn't so much about the money, but it makes me question the integrity of my work and makes me wonder if my work may have gotten stale. That along with a ton of competition on the rise, makes me wonder if I no longer stack up against the competition. And again, I know that's not what it's all about, but that seems to be what my mind defaults to. But maybe it's all just a sign to make a change and try new things.
I really want to start pushing out more original or unique work and try my hand at more art walks, galleries and pop-up shows this year and next. And in all honestly, I'm getting a little burnt out on drawing varieties of Harley Quinn to please a certain audience. She was fun to draw for a good 5 years. But enough is enough. I feel like I can't progress as an artist or come up with unique concepts by limiting myself to fan art. And unique/original is simply not gonna fly at conventions.
I'm not saying that I will never do conventions again. But I will be very selective. And I may even wait until I have an original book of sorts to make a comeback.
Needless to say, the last few years have been a blast. And I hope that someday I will return to cons with a fresh mindset and regain that feeling I used to have. Enjoy the photos below and see if you can find yourself in them. I've met a ton of great people through cons and made a few good friends. I hope you all keep following and supporting me through social media. Know that I will NOT stop creating and I promise there is some cool stuff to come. So stick around.
